If I Were In Charge Of The World

If I were in charge of the world,
I’d cancel standardized test scores,
The ACT,
College loan depts.,
And also hallway sweeps.

If I were in charge of the world
There’d be free gas.
Free education and,
Mental health for teens would be taken more seriously.

If I were in charge of the world,
You wouldn’t have to be 18 to work at most retail stores.
You wouldn’t have to watch what you eat.
You wouldn’t have bad hair days.
Or “That’s gay”.
You wouldn’t even have class at 7:50 AM.

If I were in charge of the world,
A Take 5 candy bar would be a vegetable.
All clothes would be free.
A person who sometimes forgot about homework
And sometimes forgot to do chores
Would still be allowed to be
In charge of the world.

  1. I think you should take over. I like your insistence on free education, help for those who need it, and less emphasis on the paperwork of learning and more on becoming genuine and accepting people.

  2. Hi, Maddie!
I’m definitely voting for you to become the next president. I love your beautiful ideas about education and how life should generally be. I’d be so much happier if I lived in this society. And the thing is, it isn’t that unrealistic. There wouldn’t have to be many drastic changes to make this kind of place a reality. But it’s heartbreaking to know that it isn’t ever going to happen, isn’t it? At least, not for a long time. But your writing and this poem give me hope that another world is possible. I really enjoyed the part of the poem that went, “You wouldn’t have bad hair days. Or ‘That’s gay’ .You wouldn’t even have class at 7:50 AM.” That’s the way it should be, isn’t it? I’d be satisfied to make these changes alone, these things would make the world a better place.
    Thank You for Being You,
    Taylor Denton

  3. My reply to the cancelation of standardized tests: YES! We really do focus way to much on test taking and not retaining what we learn, as well as more on technical subjects and not the skills of real life. This is a subject I'm very passionate about so I relate to your mentioning of it. Free education and better mental health care would be such awesome things to! I also like your comment about people using gay as an insult. People who do really need to rethink their lives and dispositions. The remarks about early classes and not being allowed retail store jobs are excellent as well. We get up far to early for what's healthy, and the young are restricted (or sheltered) from far too much. Especially 17-year-olds because that's just one year off from adulthood. Awesome job with this poem, there's so much truth within it.

  4. In spite of all our differences, we apparently have some similarities! One of them is the age limit on retail stores. I have a late birthday, so I won't be able to work in one store that I want to work in till after I'm graduated which sucks. And what's the point of standardized tests? They don't prove anything because I work very poorly under that kind of pressure especially if it's timed. And I think all chocolate bars should be vegetables!
